Events change but Christ’s love never does

Jesus Christ: the same yesterday, today and forever.
The above verse is taken from Hebrews 13:8 in the New Testament Bible and is one of the first things I see on the wall when I walk into the sanctuary at the Eugene Faith Center. It’s a verse written so long ago but still true today.
I have many memories at this church. I started going here about 34 years ago, even before I became a Christian. A friend invited me and I agreed to go. And I have been here ever since.
Our church is a place for different cycles in a person’s life. A family place, a place to meet and greet people, to worship, to praise and to learn. When a new atrium gathering place was built about two years ago, a further opportunity for fellowship with friends, family, and acquaintances began. And yes, we have a nice coffee bar in one corner of our atrium!
There is a verse on the wall in this atrium area that I also so love: “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). How comforting are those words!
I’ve attended happy events and sad ones at this church. My wife and I got married here in 1994. That was the happy event. Other than some of the flowers for the wedding not arriving, and me flubbing some of my vows — I said, “and putting my needs above yours” instead of the other way around — everything went as expected. And I got a laugh from the audience that I hadn’t anticipated!
I’ve also attended sad events here, funerals and memorials. Our church recently had to deal with arson, which was a new experience.
But with Christ’s help, we managed to get through all the smoke and fire — and have more strength as a body because of it.
Even though my church isn’t the only place I choose to worship Christ, it is a great place to do so, and one of the most important places in my life. It is an extended family and a place to go for support. And it is one of my sources of strength.
Our senior pastor, Steve, has been pastor of our church for about 20 years. One of his best gifts is the love he has for each one who enters the doors of our church. That is evident through his smile. And he loves Jesus with all his heart, which is a testament to his years of service to our Savior — and the congregation. We also have learned much from Steve in Bible teachings.
As I walk through the doors of my church, that reminds me of the verse I previously mentioned. One thing is for certain: I believe Christ’s love for me and everything he represents never changes. It’s the same yesterday, today and forever!
